Rethinking Clean With Mother Dirt!

IMG_20160818_131923-01

For so long, we’ve been conditioned to believe that any and all bacteria is bad, & that we need to use products to kill “99.9%” of said bacteria in order to be clean and healthy. This thought process has guided our hygiene & lifestyle decisions for decades – as is apparent by the vast array of anti-bacterial products on store shelves and in many homes*, as well as preservatives in our food and skincare, ventilation systems in our homes & offices – everything that would keep us separated from the microbial world.

The problem with using so many of these types of products, however, is that they don’t discriminate between the bad bacteria and the good bacteria, and as a result, we end up disrupting a very essential and beneficial environment that our skin needs in order to be balanced and in turn healthy and happy.

Mother Dirt seeks to correct this imbalance by creating products that help to restore and nurture this good bacteria. Our bodies play host to trillions of microorganisms and just like our gut relies on probiotics & good bacteria to be healthy, our skin also relies on good bacteria to be healthy. This ecosystem is called the skin biome.

Because of our obsession with being “clean”, we’ve created a difficult environment for these beneficial microorganisms to survive, which in turn makes our skin biome more susceptible to issues like sensitivity, irritation, acne and more.

Mother Dirt offers a few products using ingredients that have a positive influence on and supports the good bacteria our skin needs. All of the ingredients used are unpreserved, raw materials – preservatives are meant to kill bacteria and their mission is to maintain it, so you won’t find any kind of preservatives in any of their products. That is why, too, that their products have a shelf life, which you can extend by keeping them in the refrigerator.

Now..onto the products!

AO+ Mist

This is my absolute favorite product of the three, and one of my new fave skincare/personal care products ever!!! This contains live cultures of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) – a microorganism found where ever there is life (lakes, rivers, soil, our skin once upon a time). This little microbial “peacekeeper” is what keeps our skin biome happy and healthy. Sadly, modern hygiene habits have pretty much wiped them out, resulting in an imbalanced skin barrier. The AO+ Mist helps to restore those little guys and return our skin back to its healthy state by converting ammonia & urea found on our skin into nitrite (keeps bad bacteria in check) & nitric oxide (an antioxidant that soothes and calms the skin). Another fabulous benefit to this product is that it absorbs body odors like nothing else – seriously, it’s like Odor-Ban for people! Spray it anywhere you would sweat (underarms, scalp, palms, feet and even groin area) and smell how much you don’t! I found that from using this daily, my skin was less irritated (on a more consistent basis), I was less stinky (even after getting my “sweat on” working out) and I believe this along with internal probiotics is what’s keeping yeast infections away (I used to deal with them on a constant basis!). Note: Because the AOBs are so sensitive to preservatives, it’s best to use this after applying all of your other skincare, personal care and cosmetic products for maximum effectiveness.

Price – $49

Ingredients – Water, live cultured ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), disodium phosphate, magnesium chloride (natural salts).

Face & Body Cleanser

A lovely, light foaming cleanser that gently cleans without stripping precious oils or good bacteria. I found that my skin was softer and more hydrated while using this. I also noticed my skin was less irritated the longer I used it, which is always a good thing! 🙂

Price – $15

Ingredients – Water, lauramidopropyl betaine (plant-based cleanser), Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Decyl Glucoside (plant-based cleanser), Pyrus Malus (apple) Fruit Extract, Glycerin (moisture-binding), Hydrolyzed Quinoa (moisture-binding), Hydroxypropylcellulose (thickener), Citric Acid (pH stabilizer).

Shampoo

While this definitely cleaned my hair well enough, I felt I still needed to use a conditioner, despite seeing reviews of people no longer needing one. :-/ My hair did seem to stay cleaner longer, though – I generally only wash my hair every 3rd or 4th day and this seemed to extend that to 4 or 5 days. The texture is a thick gel consistency, lathers nicely, and rinses out thoroughly.

Price – $15

Ingredients – Sodium Laurylglucosides Hydroxypropylsulfonate (plant-based cleanser), Lauramidopropyl Betaine (plant-based cleanser), Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Hydrolyzed Adamsonia Digitata (Baobab) Seed Protein (Softener), Squalane (olive oil derived conditioner)

Overall thoughts:

Although many people have reported using less products or stopping using certain ones altogether since using Mother Dirt, I personally won’t be giving up any of my oils, serums or other various skincare and personal care products anytime soon. But I do love having these products (especially the mist) as a part of my daily skincare/personal care routine, and I do feel that my skin has improved since adding them to my regimen – I am also curious to try their new moisturizer to see if it helps my skin improve even more! If you haven’t yet checked out Mother Dirt, I really recommend you do and if you pick anything to try, I vote for the AO+ Mist hands down! 😉

Have you ever tried Mother Dirt products? If so, what were your favorites?

Peace & love,
