TBE’s Picks For The Best Horror Films To Check Out This Halloween!

road-man-lights-legs

Hey, loves! So, with Halloween looming closer and closer & since it is one of my favorite times of year, I thought it would be fun to do a post dedicated solely to this holiday.¬†ūüėČ

Those that know anything about me know that I love two types of movie/tv genre – superhero and horror. And when I say horror, I don’t mean blood, guts and gore with little to no plot line to the movie – that’s not real horror in my opinion, though there are some gory flicks that are actually pretty damn scary (which I’ll get to). No, what I love is the slow build up, the tension, the keep you on the edge of your seat and suck you in so deeply that you are still trapped in the story hours after the movie ends.

Truth be told I enjoy that rush of being scared. Of course, I love it most when I am on my couch, with the lights out, candles lit, a glass of wine (or two) and a blanket to hide under with the hubs snuggled up beside me. ūüėČ

Does that make me a freak?

I’ve actually been watching horror movies since I was little when my family and I would gather in our living room and watch the old Hammer Films with Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing. I became hooked and I still can’t get enough.

Every year in October I would take the week of Halloween off from work and pretty much do nothing but watch scary movies. To this day, I look forward to the #31daysofhalloween and my hubs and I have “scary movie night” on Saturdays.

So, yeah, I love horror films just a tad.

In honor of my obsession with this genre and of course, Halloween, I thought I would list some of my all time favorite horror movies (I say some because all would never fit in one post..not even several lol). Warning: there are still A LOT of movies listed!

Alright, let’s get to it!

Guide – V (vampire), W (werewolf), Z (zombie), S (slasher), P (paranormal/ghost/demon), M (monster/creature), A (alien), G (gory), C (campy), D (disturbing – not for the faint of heart); R (remake/reboot/reimagining), Ant. (anthology)

*Scare factor: 1-5 – moderately scary; 6-8 – pretty scary, might need some alcohol to watch it; 9-10 – don’t plan on sleeping!

*Not all people are scared by the same things or in the same way. I based this on what I personally find to be creepy, whether it was a particular scene, the music, the atmosphere, the story as a whole or a specific character/creature. I don’t really scare easily, but the ones listed as a 9-10 are movies that caused me to stay up late, sleep with a light on, or have nightmares. ūüėČ

2000-present – Lots of remakes/reboots in this time frame! This era also saw a return to actual suspenseful scares, without sacrificing the “gore factor” fans of the genre have come to expect. While there were tons of remakes & reboots (“Halloween” & “Friday the 13th” to name a few), this time frame also gave us some refreshingly original (or as original as anything can be) stories like “It Follows”, “Cabin in the Woods”, and “The Final Girls”, & new takes on popular monster genre like “Ginger Snaps”, “Suck” , “Dog Soldiers”, & “Contracted”. You also get some interesting homages to the 70’s style of horror like “House of 1,000 Corpses” & “Lords of Salem”.
