Ever since I dyed my hair from platinum blonde back to my natural shade of brunette, I’ve been seriously OCD about taking care of my hair. Where at one time I used to wash it every single day ( I just could not fathom going a day of not cleaning my hair!), and also using heat styling tools, I now only wash my hair every 3-4 days and rarely if ever use heat styling tools. It may seem odd to make such a drastic change in my haircare routine just because I changed the color of my hair, but when I was blonde I was still using sulfate-based shampoos. At that time, even though I had switched my skincare and make-up to 100% green & clean, there were still a few areas I was lagging – and haircare was one. I had no idea that (besides the health risks) sulfates were actually causing my scalp to produce more oil, thus making my hair greasier faster. Once I learned that (as well as the probable health issues), I immediately made the switch & went SLS free.
I’ve tried dozens of natural hair products and I’ve had some hits as well as misses. Today’s product review is all about a “hit” I’ve discovered.
ManeLine Haircare’s “NoPoo” is an all-natural shampoo alternative that is completely free from sulfates, silicones, and other harmful or damaging ingredients. Its non-foaming formula gently cleanses hair without stripping it of its natural oils, but still leaves hair feeling clean and not weighed down or greasy.
But before I delve into my experience & thoughts on their NoPoo product, I want to give a bit of an overview of this company & why they piqued my interest.
Owner Jeff & his wife, Jen created ManeLine Haircare when they were researching natural shampoos and came across a small, but growing subculture of people who were “NoPoo” (meaning they ditched the conventional shampoos in favor of DIY methods or just using water to clean hair). At this time, the two already had a company where they sold natural skincare products and wanting to keep their hair products separate, they created ManeLine Haircare.
Company Ethics: ManeLine is committed to sustainability and the health of our Earth. All vendors and ingredients are chosen with consideration to their ethical practices, environmental sustainability and of course material quality. ManeLine uses Organic and Certified Organic ingredients wherever possible, but the products themselves are not certified organic. As for my experience with their shampoo alternative, read on…
I was sent a few sample sized bottles, so to be honest, for my looong hair it wasn’t enough product for more than a few uses. I also want to point out that if you have never used a NoPoo method before, it may take some time to get used to and to find how much (or little) product you will need to get the job done.
That being said, this is one of the better shampoo alternatives that I have tried. It cleans well, smells wonderful and doesn’t leave residue behind. I still like to use a conditioner on my ends, but really this seems to condition as well as cleanse hair, so you may or may not need/want to use one. Another thing I really love about this is that it doesn’t leave my hair feeling greasy, which has been an issue for me with other shampoo alternatives I’ve tried in the past. Instead, my hair is left soft, silky, hydrated, and clean!!
Ingredients: Rainbow: Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Sapindus Mukorossi Berries, Acacia Concinna (Shikakai) Nut Powder, Lactobacillus Ferment (Natural Preservative) Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Emblica Officinalis (Amla) Fruit Powder, Glycerin, Potassium Sorbate, Xanthan Gum
Just to give you an idea of how well this product helps to retain color in color-treated hair (NoPoo vs conventional sulfate-based shampoos)..
